Hemp History Week

June 2-8

Say the secret word “Hempweek” at checkout to save 15% on our hemp products by Cousin Mary Jane Hemp Foods, Vega protein shakes and bars, Dr. Bronner’s Soaps, and other hemp-containing products.  Get a button and sticker too, if you like.  Plus - check out our Facebook that week for a super soft hemp-fiber T-shirt giveaway!

There is so much misconception about hemp out,  so we’re here to help set the record straight and spread the word about not only the health benefits, but potential economic benefits of industrial hemp production. Some quick facts:
  • George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams all grew hemp and actively advocated for commercial hemp production.
  • The 1937 Marihuana Tax Act defined hemp as a narcotic drug (despite having no psychoactive activity), requiring that farmers growing hemp hold a federal registration and special tax stamp, effectively limiting further production expansion.
  • U.S. consumers are discovering the benefits of hemp (protein, omega 3’s, skincare, textiles...). In 2012, annual retail sales of hemp products was an estimated $500 million dollars.
  • While American farmers often net less than $50 per acre for soy and corn, Canadian farmers just across the border net an average of $200-400 per acre for hemp.

We are especially excited to share some local news, given by one of our vendors, Cousin Mary Jane founder, Laura Noble.  She was honored to testify regarding the nutritional benefits of the hemp seed on a February 2014 Michigan Agriculture Committee hearing.  Laura writes:
“Our Representatives went to work, and quickly put together HB 5440 and HB 5439. The cool thing is, not only did they pass in the house, they passed with flying colors!  Let’s hope the MI Senate is on the ball because we sure would like to see these Bills completed before the end of June.  Want to help? It’s simple, just contact your Senator and ask them to get these Bills passed so Michigan can begin the journey of using this wonderful crop for industry to fuel more manufacturing jobs.”
