February eNews - What's Not to Love?

With Your Heart in Mind

With every beat of your heart, you can thank calcium and magnesium for helping muscles contract and relax.  Keeping these two in balance is essential.  Unfortunately, most Americans are magnesium deficient, often resulting from poor diet, emotional stress, some drugs (diuretics, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, insulin, cortisone), or GI disorders.

Natural Vitality CALM Magnesium is water-soluble in an ionic form, meaning it is highly bioavailable for the body to utilize - and it is needed throughout the body!

Magnesium is involved not only in your heart beat, but helps muscles and nerve function, supports healthy bones and immune system, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and promotes normal blood pressure, to name a few!

A scoop of Natural Calm in water is an easy way to fight magnesium deficiency.

A PERFECT PAIR:  Hawthorne & Cleavers

These two herbs of the month work well to support the circulatory and lymphatic systems.  Intertwined, these systems work to produce liquid transports (blood and lymph) to nourish and remove wastes.  The lymph system empties into the circulatory system’s subclavian veins near the heart.

The job of the lymph system is to kill germs, neutralize toxins and filter.  The movement of lymph is slow, about 3 liters a day when compared to blood flow which is about 5 liters a minute.  Lymph moves in one direction towards the heart and is propelled only with our own movement.  Blood is propelled by the force of our beating heart.

Hawthorn (crataegus oxyacantha)

Hawthorn berries, leaves and flowers are considered the herb for all things heart.  Hawthorns are small trees and shrubs with small apple-like fruit known as pomes and are chuck full of bioflavonoids, antioxidants, procyanidins and vitamin C which nourishes and tones the heart.

Historically its May bloom was the inspiration of the pilgrim’s ship the Mayflower.
The Hawthorn berry As a cardiac tonic it’s considered invaluable for lowering blood pressure, hypertension(1), coronary palpitations, angina, stroke, valve murmurs and enlarged hearts.(1,2)  It increases the heart’s ability of oxygen utilization and the reduction of cholesterol when used on a regular basis.(3)
How does it work?

Research suggests that hawthorn works in part by dilating the arteries and veins, thus lowering blood pressure.  It contains a component called proanthocyanidin which relaxes blood vessels farther from the heart.(4)  When studied by a group of Cochrane Researches using hawthorn extract and a placebo for treating 855 patients with chronic heart failure they found significant improvement in heart workload, increased exercise tolerance, reduced oxygen consumption by the heart, reduced shortness of breath, with a small number of patients reporting mild nausea(5), which could have been from detoxification.

Cleavers herb is also known as goosegrass or sweet woodruff and is commonly used with eczema.  As a tea or skin wash is assists with the body’s healing process for scrapes, cuts and complexion.  Used as a poultice, salve or in ointments, herbalists have long regarded cleavers as a valuable lymphatic and diuretic tonic and used it for centuries for a variety of skin ailments, light wounds and burns, swollen lymph nodes and glands.(6)

How does it work?
Lymphatic support to reduce swelling and heal.  The lymph system is responsible for clearing extracellular waste, a positive for glands, cysts, water retention and edema. It promotes urination when used as a tincture or tea.  Researches find that Cleavers Herb has the ability to assist our bodies’ lymphatic system to flush wastes and toxins that can show up as eczema, psoriasis and other skin issues.(7,8)  This is how it stimulates cleansing resulting in a better complexion and clearer skin.
