BREAK BREAD TOGETHER

So maybe we don't literally break bread anymore, but July is a time to socialize with the friends and neighbors, and food is almost always involved.  Instead of the glutinous, over-processed, bleached white bread that is short on flavor and nutrition, this summer choose bread that is going to satisfy taste buds, be free from common allergens, and be more healthful.

Perfect for a backyard BBQ, Brazilian Oven Cheese Bread or "Brazil Bites" are little cheesy bread balls that are naturally gluten-free and all delicious.  Find them in the freezer section.  Just warm them up in an oven (or 2nd tier of the grill) and enjoy a chewy, cheesy roll with a crisp crust.   Each bread ball is roughly the size of a golf ball, so it is perfect little appetizer and great for gatherings.  ($6.79)

For sandwiches, Gluten-Free eaters can finally enjoy a vegan bread made with 100% plant-based ingredients that are Non-GMO Project Certified.  Little Northern Bakehouse has perfected their bread recipe to tantalize even the gluten eating population.  Currently, we offer:

Millet-Chia Loaf - Millet is an ancient cereal crop that even today feeds about one third of the world. Rich in iron, B vitamins and calcium, millet has a mild corn flavor and provides a light, moist, smooth texture to this bread. Adding whole millet and chia seeds adds some crunch and interest.  ($7.99)

Seeds & Grains Loaf - You’ll enjoy a complete range of delicious things to crunch on – sunflower seeds, whole millet, flax seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds and brown rice. All these flavors combine to create an attractive taste and moist texture, yes, just like regular bread. Serve it to friends or family – they won’t believe it’s gluten free. ($7.99)

If you don't have any gluten-free eaters among your crew, try the new staff-favorite from Silver Hills Bakery.  While we love our Food for Life sprouted Ezekiel bread, it lacks the softness that some people prefer.  That's part of the reason why we love Silver Hills Organic Sprouted breads.  You get all of the benefits of sprouting without the tougher texture.  Currently, we carry the Ancient Grains, Hemptation, and Big 16 sandwich breads, as well as Herb Garlic sprouted Bagels (try these with Nancy's Organic Cream Cheese - YUM), and classic Burger Buns. (All Silver Hills breads are only $4.99!)

As for burgers to eat with these buns - or rather veggie-burgers - find deluxe meatless patties in Hilary's Curry Burger & Kimchi Burgers.  When you see the ingredients, you'll be amazed at the simplicity.  When you taste them, you won't even miss the meat!  Hilary's was founded by a restaurant chef, who launched the company based on her "World's Best Veggie Burger" that was free from gluten, dairy, soy, egg, corn, and nuts.  The certified organic and non-GMO ingredients are minimally processed, resulting in a drool-worthy burger that almost anyone can enjoy! ($3.49)

SODA with STYLE

Make your soda stand out with Organicville's Sky Valley Sparkling Sodas.  One of the only major certified organic sodas on the market (not owned by Coca Cola),  Sky Valley has unique and sophisticated flavors like Honey Green Tea & Elderflower, Green Apple, Pear, Strawberry and Concord Grape to name a few.  Serve it chilled in the lovely glass bottle and take a break from the norm.  ($5.99/4pk or $2.19 each)

FERMENTED, FUNCTIONAL & FUN

New GUT SHOTS from Farmhouse Culture combine fermented organic veggies and cold press them into juice that tastes bold and vibrant, brimming with live active cultures.  As the name implies, Gut Shots are meant for shooting, sipping, adding to salad dressings, or smoothies. They contain at least 10 servings per 16oz bottle. Choose from Garlic Dill Pickle, Ginger Beet, or Kimchi.  Each is just $5.49.

HERBS of the MONTH

Lavender

Lavender is a flowering plant in the mint family. Historically known for its purple flower and pale grey green leaves. It has a sweet floral fragrance and its many uses. Lavender is derived from Latin meaning “to wash”. So it’s no surprise that lavender has been used to scent bath oil and salts, soaps and shampoos.

Lavender can be used in:

· perfume, sachets, balms, salves, and other bath and beauty products

· medicinally for stress relief, calming, insomnia, tension headaches, migraines, motion sickness, gas, cramps, toothaches, bug bites, wounds, and burns (including sun burns)

· cooking, it has a pleasant yet slightly bitter flavor. Consider lavender in rubs, marinades, sauces, cookies, ice tea, sorbet, lemonade and in spice blends (Herbes de Provence).

· wedding ceremonies, lavender is growing in popularity to toss as confetti, instead of rice

Frequently asked question: What’s the difference between spike lavender and true lavender?

Spike lavender has a strong camphor like aroma and is used mainly to scent cleaning products and as insect repellent.

True lavender is prized for its essential oil, medicinal, culinary and aromatic value.

Lavandin is a hybrid of lavender and spike lavender yielding a plant that produces an essential oil that can be used in crafts, toiletries and household products.

Lavender is an extremely gentle herb and is known to be safe for children and pregnant in the second or third trimester and for nursing mothers according to Dr. Jill Edwards, an Oregon N.D. specializing in prenatal care.

Lavender is so popular, it can be found in products throughout the store, but primarily:

In Bulk – Organic flowers are $4.55/oz

Essential Oils – available from Mountain Rose Herbs in 3 varieties of 0.5oz/15ml ($12.59 - $28.49), from Arbor Oil in a 1oz spray ($16.49), from NOW in a 4oz bottle ($41.99), in a roll-on oil blend from AuraCacia ($10.79), and Young Living's 15ml bottle of Lavender essential oil is ON SALE for $23.99 (Reg. $33.99) this month.

Mustard Seed

You know it -  a tiny round seed, that’s subtly hot with a bit of a bite. It’s not just for hotdogs, but you can use it in many meat dishes, baked beans, soups, salad dressing, potato dishes, sauerkraut, deviled eggs, succotash, chilies, curries and grain dishes.

As for nutrition, it is an excellent source of excellent source of selenium, a nutrient which may help reduce the severity of asthma, decrease some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and help prevent cancer. It is also rich in magnesium, also shown to help reduce the severity of asthma, to lower high blood pressure, to restore normal sleep patterns in women having difficulty with the symptoms of menopause, to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks, and to prevent heart attack in patients suffering from atherosclerosis or diabetic heart disease.  Mustard seeds qualify as a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids and manganese, phosphorus, copper, and vitamin B1.

Here’s 10 Fun Facts you may NOT have known about mustard.

1. It’s a Brassica plant that’s closely related to broccoli, cauliflower, turnips and cabbage.

2. It was used by the Egyptians and Romans, who ground the seeds into a spice paste.

3. It has been used for centuries for soothing scorpion stings, clearing sinuses, increasing your appetite, and ease aches.

4. In the 13th century Dijon France was the hub of the mustard industry, the popular tangy taste came from using “verjuice” the acidic juice of unripe grapes vs. the traditional vinegar.

5. Dry mustard acts as an emulsifier (helps mixing oil and water) in mayonnaise and salad dressings.

6. Classic yellow mustard isn’t yellow. The added turmeric turns it that bright yellow.

7. The old jar of mustard in the back of the refrigerator is probably still good. Mustard condiment is a blend of spices and a vinegar. Refrigerating the mustard keeps that spicy bite strong, but for storage purposes, keeping it cold doesn’t matter.

8. The phrase “Can’t cut the mustard” once referred to the specialized modified scythe that would be used to scrape the tough crust that would form in the large Old English mustard vats during the maturing process.

9. Saskatchewan, Canada is the world’s largest exporter of mustard.

10. Aug. 6 is National Mustard Day, and you can visit the National Mustard Museum in Middleton, Wisconsin.

Find organic yellow and brown mustard seeds and yellow mustard powder in our bulk section for $0.82 or less per ounce for all your culinary needs.

Take a Mustard Bath with Dr. Singha’s blend of mustard and refreshing herbs like eucalyptus, rosemary, wintergreen and thyme. This stimulating formula is popular in England, used to soothe sore muscles, and encourage sweating and gentle cleansing for glowing skin.
