May eNews

OUT & ABOUT in MAY

It's finally starting to warm up in Michigan.  April's snowy days are a distant memory as we start to bust out the shorts and sandals.  Most of us want to soak up as much of the sweet warming rays as possible, but be careful - sun can still burn our winter-paled skin during these longer days.

So do your skin a favor, and find a mineral-based sunscreen that can nourish skin while it protects.  Raw Elements sunscreen is top Rated #1 by Environmental Working Group for safety and efficacy.  It is also endorsed by pro-surfer Garrett McNamara who know the importance of skin protection and protecting the oceans.

Raw Elements sunscreen contains over 70% Certified Organic Ingredients, is coral reef safe, and provides UVA-UVB True broad spectrum protection.  Organic oils moisturize and  make it very water and sweat resistant (80 minutes) so it never runs or stings eyes.  You can even apply it under water!

PEDI-PERFECT: Focus on Feet

Prepare those pretty piggies for summer sandals with a little natural pampering.

Ionic Foot Spa
Bathe your feet in mineral (dead sea) salts, while the foot spa ionizes the water and helps your skin detoxify.  Aside from reported benefits from the detoxification (reduced pain and inflammation, aid in weight loss, clearer skin), foot spas can soften skin and deodorize - the added bonus is fabulous feet!  Make an appointment with Suzan today - sessions are only $30 and take 30-45 minutes.

Deep Steep Candy-Mint
This line is specifically formulated for feet with cooling peppermint oil, and plant extracts to refresh and soothe tired feet and legs.  The Foot Creme includes rich shea butter to give deep moisture for dry feet; the Foot Polish smooths rough areas while stimulating circulation.  Deep Steep Foot Stick is a pocket-size version you can take to the beach or wherever summer travels take you!

Pacifica Polish
Make your toes pop with nail colors from Pacifica!  Featured in last month's newsletter, we have a full line of colors for $8.49 each**, all of which are free from the 7 most common harsh chemicals usually found in nail polish (formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, phthalates, camphor, xylene, and parabens).  Plus it is 100% vegan and cruelty free!

Toe Rings - the Finishing Touch
Sterling Silver toe rings complete the pedi-makeover.   For only $16-$20 each**, choose from five different styles in thin or wide to stack, mix and match.  If you don't know your toe ring size, in-store fittings are available, so leave a little extra time to try it out!

**SALE** Buy one toe ring, get 30% off one Pacifica nail polish May 1-31.

NEW CRYSTAL JEWELRY & WALL ART

After years of customers asking if we have crystals, we can finally say YES.  Semi-precious stones and crystals are made into lovely and affordable jewelry or mounted and displayed in shadow-box wall art.  Get inspired, energized, or peaceful:  learn what different stones represent, and find the piece that suits you best!  For a healthy dose of inspiration without crystals, find wood block printed wall art with phrases and images that remind us to stay positive.

YOUR VISION IN FOCUS

Did you know 75% of vision loss is preventable?  Since May is National Healthy Vision Month, here are a few tips for maintaining good eye health.

1.  Make healthy lifestyle choices: eating lots of fish (Omega-3's), leafy greens (antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin), orange vegetables (beta carotene), citrus fruits and berries (vitamin C), and almonds (vitamin E).

2. Early detection and timely treatment is key to protect and prevent vision loss from diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, etc.

3. Know your family history – glaucoma 3x more common in African Americans Diabetic eye conditions are more common in Hispanics, Latinos and Native American.  Older adults are at a higher risk for age related conditions.

4. Wear protective eye gear when operating hazardous equipment, certain sports or hobbies.  Wear sunglasses to protective against UV rays when outside.

OTHER EYE HELPERS:
Pinhole Glasses
What’s the Science?Pinhole glasses are ideal for people are looking to retrain their eyes for better clarity and vision. You do see more clearly.

How do they work?Have you ever tried reading in bright sunlight? Did you notice how easy it was? Your pupil narrows down into a tight “pinhole” restricting the amount of light, but directing the beam into the eye and retina. The pinhole glasses do the similar thing, without the eye strain. The resulting image is more focused. The manufacturers suggest that the pinholes encourage the ciliary muscles of the eye to become stronger, toning the eye into a more correct shape. Improvements are said to only take a few weeks when worn daily for 15 minutes or more.  2 styles are available for $24.49!

Herb of the Month:  Ginkgo biloba
One of the oldest living tree species, dating back to the Jurassic period.

Ginkgo improves blood flow which helps the entire body, including the eyes and specifically the retina. Ginkgo has been used historically for glaucoma, diabetic eye conditions and age related macular degeneration (AMD).

Properties:  Anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-depressant, and a vasodilator, (helps open blood vessels, assisting in lowering blood pressure).  Ginkgo can assist with coughs, burns, wounds, and the heart muscle.   It’s a tonic herb, meaning that it’s okay to take over time.

Cautions:  Per www.webmd.com, ginkgo interacts with many medicines, so consult your healthcare provider with your health concerns.

Releasing Grief Workshop

EFT Practitioner/Coach - Christine Shreve,
Sat. May 16th  10:30 a.m. – 11:30a.m.
$45  if you Pre-register by Thurs. 5/14,  $50 at the door.

Grief can come in many forms: loss of a loved one, a pet, a career, a marriage, a livelihood, a limb, a former way of life, and more. Some grief is able to be overcome, after a time of mourning. Even though we seem to move on, there are things we never really get over. So many stay bitter after a divorce, or a disease.  Lyme disease, for example, lingers for years and can cause emotional grief that stays in the body, perpetuating more symptoms.

EFT is a gentle, non-invasive Energy Medicine which is also referred to as “Tapping”.  EFT is being used for so many issues, helping the Body heal itself. What Christine discovered through her work and her own personal experience, is that EFT works wonders for grief relief.

Christine has found that many of her client's core issues were some sort of grief, being carried around in their bodies. Because of the debilitating negative emotion of grief, these Clients began to have other health issues as well.  Negative emotion of any kind left un-cleared, will eventually begin inviting more disease.

When Christine had to put down her nineteen year old dog, she began suffering horrible grief and guilt. The painful emotions would double her over and she couldn't function. She began Tapping and did so for almost 4 weeks, which allowed her to heal, and a miracle to happen for her, about which she has written in a soon to be published book, "I Saw Heaven in my Dog’s Eyes."

Christine knows how important it is to keep the body balanced, and cleared of negative emotions. EFT seems to be the best and fastest way to accomplish this. She is passionate about helping others discover this for themselves.

April Springs Anew

Easter Greetings

Hop on in Easter Sunday, as we will be open for the first time ever this year! But beforehand, fill those baskets with dairy-free, vegan, organic chocolate by Sjaak's

Don't settle for those waxy, old chocolates that taste like the Easter bunny's been hiding them for a year (you know the ones). Sjaak's milk chocolate eggs and almond butter-filled bunnies will be a delightful break from the norm. NEW LOW PRICES!

Plus, find all manner of organic, non-dairy, gluten-free, nut-free, vegetarian sweets like Yummy Earth candies, Tasty Brand gummies, and Surf Sweets jelly beans!

Earth Day Celebration!

April 22nd marks Earth Day's 45th anniversary this year!  It is a time to reflect on how we can responsibly use our natural resources, while minimizing our output of toxic chemicals or greenhouse gases.  As individuals, small changes in routines can cumulatively have a big impact.  It can be as simple as picking up trash in your neighborhood park or roadside, or finding a spot to plant a tree or native plants in your community or own backyard.

Bearing in mind that our household cleaners rinsed down the drain end up going out to our streams, rivers, and eventually our Great Lakes, so make a responsible choice with "green" cleaners, without harsh chemicals.

But it's not just about the outdoors - the INDOOR environment is just as important to your health, if not moreso.  After all, it is where most people spend 90% of their time.  In fact the EPA estimates that indoor air pollutants are 2-5 times (sometimes 100 times) higher indoors than the outdoors.  This is due to a variety of factors, some of which may be out of your immediate control, but buying cleaning products IS under your control.

Beware of deceptive, green-washed brands that advertise "natural scent" or just have "green" in the name.  Manufacturers sometimes selectively share ingredient info, not listing all the ingredients on the label, but if they do - look out for these:

Phosphates – cause algae proliferation in bodies of water, killing marine life
Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE's) – cause reproductive defects, liver and kidney damage

Ammonia

Volatile organic compounds (VOC's), including 1,4-dichlorobenzene – cause nose and throat irritation, dizziness, asthma
Glycol ethers
Formaldehyde
Chlorine
Ethanolamines
Phthalates – cause sperm damage and reproductive defects in boys

We carefully choose products that we know work and work well  - we use many of them to clean the store!  Plus, they are at a reasonable price for the quality, and do NOT contain petroleum distillates such as benzene, or 1,4 dioxane, or other harsh chemicals listed above.

Some of our favorite brands include:

Better Life
ECOS Earth Friendly
Grab Green
pHurity Cleaners

Save 15% on all the cleaners, laundry soaps, recycled/renewable paper products, and bioplastics

April 19-25th only!

Did you know that bioplastics use things like corn starch and vegetable oils instead of petroleum to make plates, utensils, and other things that get thrown away.  Not only do the bioplastics reduce our dependence on oil, they are also designed to be biodegradable.

While we try to keep the spirit of Earth Day Every Day, we want to extend it to a week long savings event!

We'll be showing the 80 minute film at 10am, 1pm, 3pm, and 5pm.  Admission is Free!

TRY IT TUESDAY - April 28

Who doesn't like to try it before you buy it?  In each department, expect to find a few different product samples for "Try It Tuesday" on the last Tuesday in April.

Featuring both in-store samples, like a ready made gluten-free hot soup, and some things you can try at home, like supplements and shampoo packets.

Come on in and see what's new!  If there are items that you've always wanted to try, let us know.  You might find it sampled on another "Try It Tuesday."

April is National IBS Awareness Month

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases suggest that eating smaller meals may help IBS symptoms.  IBS is a group of symptoms that effects over 30 million  people in the USA.  The MayoClinic says that symptoms can vary from person to person but often include abdominal pain, cramping, a bloated feeling, gas, mucus in the stool, and diarrhea or constipation, and sometimes with alternative bouts of each.  It’s important to consultant a physician when more serious symptoms such as rectal bleeding, sharpening abdominal pain and weight loss.

Mayo Clinic suggests adding more fiber.  There are two kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble.  You need both.
Insoluble: bowel cleanser, more efficient bowel movements, decreases the chances of of getting constipated.
Soluble: Great for appetite control, creates a full feeling effect.

Think of the green and yellow kitchen sponge.  The green tough side is like the insoluble fiber.  It has a scrubbing action.  Insoluble fibers do not dissolve in water and have a laxative effect.  You can find insoluble fiber in brown rice, dark leafy vegetables, and root vegetable skins.  Psyllium husks and avocado have both types.  Diatomaceous earth contains a large amounts silica which is a component of insoluble fibers.

Soluble fibers absorb water, swell and turn to gel during digestion.  Prebiotics contain soluble fibers to feed the good bacteria called probiotics.  Probiotics are micro-warriors of our health.  Healthy adults have about 4 pounds of these guys in their healthy gut.
Coffee, garlic, wheat and dairy products are common triggers for IBS.  Bland foods are not automatically safe foods for IBS sufferers.  The Low FODMAP diet is recommended, which Stanford Hospital and Clinic details hereLEARN MORE at our FODMAP Diet Class April 23 - Details below.

April Spice of the Month: Ginger
Ginger is that pungent, spicy aromatic root that adds zest to Asian dishes and has been shown to be helpful from simple indigestion to severe nausea and cramps.  Relief for morning sickness, sea sickness and post chemotherapy nausea.  Ginger has some powerful digestive enzymes in it.

Ginger: Super digestive aid.  Anti-spasmodic, improves intestinal muscle tone and assist in preventing vomiting.  Used for gas, colic and loss of appetite.  Ginger contains several chemicals which are used in antacids, laxatives and anti-gas medications.
Ginger is available in many forms.  Dried in our bulk section, crystallized ginger, powder, teas, and supplements, candies, cookies, and in sauces.

All of us could benefit from treating our gut with care, whether you have IBS, food intolerance, or just a sensitive stomach.  In addition, ginger, peppermint, chamomile, and fennel can help prevent pain, spasms and bloating.  Of the many herbs that can be used to combat the discomfort of IBS, Ginger is our pick for herb of the month.

Going Green with Chlorophyll

Liquid chlorophyll by Nature's Sunshine is an emerald-green color by nature, flavored with a hint o' spearmint, and boasts a whole pot'o benefits.

Chlorophyll is the lifeblood of green plants.  In fact, it's molecule is nearly identical to hemoglobin in humans, except with a magnesium atom at the center rather than iron. So chlorophyll promotes natural blood-cleansing and circulatory functions.  It encourages balanced pH levels, and it helps neutralize body odors, acting like an "internal deoderant".

This St. Patrick's Day, skip the artificially colored green beer and artificially-flavored gum-based beverages for a more healthful option!  Find a recipe for a better for you Minty Sham-rockin Shake on our Pinterest page.

Try before you buy!  We'll have Nature's Sunshine Liquid chlorophyll available for sampling for two weeks, Mar 8-21st.

HERB of the MONTH:  Uva Ursi

Why is it called Uva Ursi?  Literally translates to bear's grape, bears love this little evergreen berry.  And it grows in colder northern climates, including Michigan!

Historically Uva Ursi has been one of the most successful herbs taken for urinary tract infections and edema.  It's active properties include: antiseptic, astringent and diuretic.
As an antiseptic, it cleans out the urinary tract system and aids the breakup of kidney stones.  That’s why we are highlighting it for March, National Kidney Month.

Not only is Uva Ursi good for the kidneys, it has a healthy effect on the liver, spleen, pancreas, gallbladder, and even the uterus and prostate.  Some have found it to be helpful in bedwetting situations.  It strengthens, soothes and tones the mucous membranes of the kidneys and bladder.(1)

February eNews - What's Not to Love?

With Your Heart in Mind

With every beat of your heart, you can thank calcium and magnesium for helping muscles contract and relax.  Keeping these two in balance is essential.  Unfortunately, most Americans are magnesium deficient, often resulting from poor diet, emotional stress, some drugs (diuretics, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, insulin, cortisone), or GI disorders.

Natural Vitality CALM Magnesium is water-soluble in an ionic form, meaning it is highly bioavailable for the body to utilize - and it is needed throughout the body!

Magnesium is involved not only in your heart beat, but helps muscles and nerve function, supports healthy bones and immune system, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and promotes normal blood pressure, to name a few!

A scoop of Natural Calm in water is an easy way to fight magnesium deficiency.
All flavors are 20% Off in February!

A PERFECT PAIR:  Hawthorne & Cleavers

These two herbs of the month work well to support the circulatory and lymphatic systems.  Intertwined, these systems work to produce liquid transports (blood and lymph) to nourish and remove wastes.  The lymph system empties into the circulatory system’s subclavian veins near the heart.

The job of the lymph system is to kill germs, neutralize toxins and filter.  The movement of lymph is slow, about 3 liters a day when compared to blood flow which is about 5 liters a minute.  Lymph moves in one direction towards the heart and is propelled only with our own movement.  Blood is propelled by the force of our beating heart.

Hawthorn (crataegus oxyacantha)

Hawthorn berries, leaves and flowers are considered the herb for all things heart.  Hawthorns are small trees and shrubs with small apple-like fruit known as pomes and are chuck full of bioflavonoids, antioxidants, procyanidins and vitamin C which nourishes and tones the heart.

Historically its May bloom was the inspiration of the pilgrim’s ship the Mayflower.
The Hawthorn berry As a cardiac tonic it’s considered invaluable for lowering blood pressure, hypertension(1), coronary palpitations, angina, stroke, valve murmurs and enlarged hearts.(1,2)  It increases the heart’s ability of oxygen utilization and the reduction of cholesterol when used on a regular basis.(3)
How does it work?

Research suggests that hawthorn works in part by dilating the arteries and veins, thus lowering blood pressure.  It contains a component called proanthocyanidin which relaxes blood vessels farther from the heart.(4)  When studied by a group of Cochrane Researches using hawthorn extract and a placebo for treating 855 patients with chronic heart failure they found significant improvement in heart workload, increased exercise tolerance, reduced oxygen consumption by the heart, reduced shortness of breath, with a small number of patients reporting mild nausea(5), which could have been from detoxification.

How does it work?
Lymphatic support to reduce swelling and heal.  The lymph system is responsible for clearing extracellular waste, a positive for glands, cysts, water retention and edema. It promotes urination when used as a tincture or tea.  Researches find that Cleavers Herb has the ability to assist our bodies’ lymphatic system to flush wastes and toxins that can show up as eczema, psoriasis and other skin issues.(7,8)  This is how it stimulates cleansing resulting in a better complexion and clearer skin.
