HERB OF THE MONTH - HEMP

It's not just for Hippies

Hemp History Week

In June, we are highlighting the oft-misunderstood hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, to clarify misconceptions and share the many potential benefits to our health, environment, and our green economy!

First off, hemp is sold as a a nut (seed), shelled or unshelled, as an oil, or as fiber. This is distinct from cannabidiol (CBD) oil, an extract from hemp, discussed below.
No worries about drug testing, as all varieties of hemp grown for food contain about 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a nonsignificant amount of the psychoactive component. Consuming hemp will not get you high, but it WILL give your body essential fatty acids, proteins, and fiber.

TOP HEALTH BENEFITS

1. Super Food: Highly Nutritious

More than 25% of the total calories from hemp hearts (the shelled hempseed) come from high quality protein, containing all nine essential amino acids to form a complete protein. Pretty good when compared to flax or chia, which provide around 16-18%.

They are rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs), comprised mostly of Omega-6s (linoleic acid) and Omega-3s, alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) in about a 3:1 ratio, which is considered ideal. Hemp seeds also contain gamma-linoleic acid (GLAs), associated with aiding skin issues like psoriasis and eczema, among other conditions. Hemp seeds are also a substantial source of vitamins and minerals like Iron, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Manganese, and Zinc!

2. Heart Smart

These essential fatty acids are not able to be produced by our bodies, so we must get them through our diet. By weight, the oil makes up about 50% of the hemp seed, of which the fatty acid profile is comprised of 80% polyunsaturated fats, 11% monounsaturated fats, 9% saturated fats and zero trans fats. This is a great ratio for heart health, and has been studied for it's ability to combat heart disease and reduce blood pressure. Emerging research suggests hemp's fatty acids may help reduce LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol as well. Plus, the toasted seed in shell is an excellent fiber source, which is associated with digestive and cardiovascular health.

3. Skin Food

Hemp oil is often found in lotions, soaps, and cosmetics because of it's excellent skin soothing properties. You'll find it in Merry Hempsters Balms and Dr. Bronner's soaps. Taken internally, food grade hemp oil is often recommended for dry, itchy skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, due to the Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs).

4. Plant-Based Protein Powerhouse

Unique in the plant world, hemp contains all essential amino acids, including rather substantial amount of l-arginine. Similar in protein content (by weight) to beef and lamb, it is comparatively easy to digest. As mentioned earlier, it is about 25% high quality protein, and just 2-3 tablespoons provide 11 grams of protein.

5. Monthly Moderator

A type of Omega-6 fatty acid, GLA has been used to reduce symptoms of PMS and menopause caused by hormone imbalance. Some women noticed reduced breast tenderness, depression, irritability, and fluid retention. While more research is needed, the proposed mechanism suggests the GLA helps to regulate these imbalances and reduce inflammation.

6. How To Use

Hemp hearts have a mild, nutty flavor (like a sunflower-pine nut cross) that makes an excellent topping for yogurt, cereal, salads, cooked vegetables, or mix-in for a smoothie. You can find hemp powder as an ideal protein boost. The hearts are a great gluten-free alternative to bread crumbs. While you can lightly dry toast them to enhance the nutty flavor, high heat will break down the delicate fatty acids and degrade the health benefits.

For this reason, put hemp seeds in the fridge after opening; store hemp oil in the refrigerator and use it as a finishing oil rather than a cooking oil. Works well as a salad dressing, drizzled over pasta, veggies, or popcorn.

*NEW* Plus CBD Oil Spray
$19.99 Introductory Price!
Again, cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive component of Cannabis sativa plant and will NOT give a "high" feeling that is associated with psychoactive compound, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). While there have been thousands of studies on CBD with potential medical applications for anxiety, neurogenerative diseases, Crohn's disease, certain types of cancer, and more, it remains largely restricted in the US.*
We are happy to have Plus CBD oil available because of their state-of-the-art CO2 "cold" extraction process from agricultural hemp that produces a high quality, fully traceable, and 3rd party tested product. The 1oz spray contains 1mg CBD per serving. (This product is not intended for use under age 18. Do not take if you are pregnant or lactating. Do not exceed recommended serving size. Always consult with your physician before introducing it into your health regime.)

As a fiber, it is used for fabric, in manufacturing, and even building material! It is fast growing, low-impact, renewable agricultural product. Even the founding fathers knew the benefits, grown by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. During WWII, farmers were encouraged to grow it through the Hemp for Victory program. This has since changed through conflated, out-dated drug policy laws, so that industrial hemp is mostly grown in Canada and China. While select states do have provisions for growing hemp, the US is largely missing out on it's enormous economic and medical potential. Add your voice to the common-sense movement to allow farmers to grow industrial hemp again, go to VoteHemp.com/takeaction.

Keep Bugs Away Naturally
The struggle is real. Mosquitos in Michigan can be monstrous during the summertime, but fending them off can be a toxic endeavor. Why not use repellent that is safe, effective, and easy on the environment. Try NEW Brittanie's Thyme Organic Bug Spray made with essential oils.
Provides floral and woodsy scents that create a pleasing aroma for people, not pests. Does NOT contain citronella and will NOT stain clothes. (When it comes to babies and toddlers under 2 years old, spray clothing, stroller, blankets or grass area around them instead of directly on skin.) Just $9.49 for 4oz or $4.49 for 1oz spray.
