Back in the Swing of Things

Many of us feel that the pace of life starts to speed up right about now,  so let’s give ourselves an extra nutritional boost and a bit more hydration to keep up!

Of course, we recommend drinking half your body weight in fluid ounces of the oxygen-rich alkaline water to keep fully hydrated. So Keep drinking that alkaline water, but add a little flair to keep in interesting.

New Italian Glass 36oz bottles with swing top lids make the most mundane beverage seem just a little fancy.  Check out the new designs by VESSEL Drinkware - just $15.99 each

Speaking of fancy, we now carry single-serve cups of Cameron’s Coffee for the gourmet experience without the coffee house prices.

Cameron’s unique cup works in all the major single serve machines and is actually a sturdy coffee filter - NOT PLASTIC!  This provides superior flavor and less waste than the typical single-serve cup.  Get a box of 12 for $6.99.

Superfruits to the Rescue

NingXia Red (sounds like NIN-ja) is a tasty, antioxidant-rich drink that combines fruit juice and essential oils with a particularly potent type of Goji berry (aka Wolfberry).  Cultivated originally in the Ninxia province in China, this wolfberry has been consumed for hundreds of years.  Interestingly, the number of natives from that region who live past 100 years old is four times the national average.

This juice is combined with fresh, organic fruit juices like pomegranate, cherry, plum, and blueberry to support joint, brain, and immune function.  Plus, Young Living orange, yuzu, lemon, and tangerine essential oils are added for flavor and their d-limonene, a compound shown to have anti-cancer benefits.

Goji berries promote eye, heart health and longevity because it contains a variety of antioxidants like zeaxanthin and superoxide dismutase (SOD).  Goji berries are the richest known natural source of zeaxanthin, a compound found in human retinas associated with lower incidence of cataracts and greater visual acuity.

As we grow older, the levels of lipid peroxide in our blood increase, while levels of health-protecting antioxidants like SOD decrease. In a clinical study of people who consumed doses of goji berry, SOD in the blood increased by a remarkable 48 percent while hemoglobin increased by 12 percent. Even better, lipid peroxide levels dropped by an astonishing 65 percent.

In 1988, the Beijing Nutrition Research Institute conducted detailed chemical analyses and nutritional composition studies of the dried goji berry fruit. The Ningxia wolfberry contained over 18 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, more protein than bee pollen, more vitamin C than oranges, and nearly as much beta carotene as carrots.  At 16% protein by volume, the wolfberry definitely lives up to it’s Superfruit status.

Another superfruit boost is Navitas Naturals Acai (ah-sigh-ee) berry powder. To retain maximum nutrient and flavor of the fresh fruit, organic berries from the Amazon are freeze dried. It has been a staple of indigenous cultures there, providing antioxidants, omega fats, protein, and fiber. It's flavor is somewhere between chocolate and wild berries with an almost a creamy texture that helps keep you full and energized throughout the day.

Thyroid: Small Gland with a Big Job
Talk with Dr. Strauchman, Natural Wellness & Pain Relief Center (NWPRC)
Sat. Sept 13  11am-noon
FREE (please register  for space considerations)

Twenty-seven million Americans have thyroid disease--and more than eight out of 10 of them are women, reports the American Thyroid Association.

This butterfly-shaped gland in the neck which secretes hormones to help regulate metabolism. When the thyroid gland slows or stops producing certain hormones it is called hypothyroidism. Signs and symptoms can vary widely - fatigue, unexplained weight gain, muscle and joint pains - and may be mild at first.

Unfortunately, many people are never told that there are natural and integrative approaches to hypothyroidism that can resolve patient symptoms and help keep them resolved. Most people aren’t aware that even though they have hypothyroidism, they don’t even need thyroid medication to solve the problem! Treating hypothyroidism can be a very complex process; one that should be managed by a physician who can spend a lot of time with you to help create a comprehensive approach to helping you feel better.

Dr. Megan Strauchman, the medical director for the Natural Wellness & Pain Relief Center in Grand Blanc, will be guest speaking on her comprehensive, compassionate approach to overall thyroid health. She is board certified in integrative medicine, and has maintained a clinical practice for the last 8 years focused on hormonal health. Thyroid care is central in her clinical treatment. According to Dr. Strauchman, “I want to people to come away knowing that they have options. Not just for managing their thyroid symptoms, but to actually make them better.”
