DAD APPRECIATION

Though they may not always show it, we oftentimes forget that Dads like to feel dapper and refreshed too!  Pamper your Papa this Father's Day with some natural grooming products for men.

For Dads who are rockin' facial hair, find Badger Balm Beard Balm ($15.99), Beard Oil ($15.99) and Mustache Wax ($9.99) now available.

You may be wondering, what’s the difference between beard oil and a beard balm?

Beard oil softens facial hair and nourishes the skin underneath creating the conditions for healthy beard growth.
Beard oil is especially helpful during the first six weeks of beard growth, when itching can be a problem. It can be used to soothe skin underneath the beard at any time or as an intensive night treatment. Once a beard reaches the desirable length, beard balm is a daily, leave-in conditioner that works wonders as a moisturizer and styling aid to tame any rogue hairs, leaving your beard looking shiny and healthy.

Beard balm, on the other hand, is like pomade made especially for beards. It’s thicker than beard oil, but not as thick as a beard wax.  With a blend of certified organic Jojoba and Babassu and powerful antioxidants, over time beards not only looks healthier, but feel softer as well.  Enjoy a pleasingly light aroma with subtle hints of Bergamot, Vertiver, Cardamom, and Black Pepper.

Every Man Jack Razor Set:  For Dads that prefer a sleek smooth look, this handcrafted razor gives maximum control and maneuverability. With six fine, stainless steel blades and an easy-to-rinse cartridge, the open flow design allows hair and shave cream to pass through cleanly, eliminating corrosion and extending blade life.  It’s built for the closest shave ever.  Set is made from 50% post-consumer recycled content, and includes 1 handle, 4 razors (SALE PRICE $24.99).

Warhorse Body Wash:  Containing a blend of Coconut, Sunflower, Castor, Avocado, Sweet Almond and Vitamin E oils with Dead Sea Salt and Essential oils that nourishes skin as it washes.  Warhorse body washes are 3rd party tested for pure ingredients; that is, Non-GMO certified, no synthetics used.  The Sunflower oils is grown on family farms in Southern states and expeller-pressed processed to ensure no chemical extraction is used.  Available in refreshing Eucalyptus-Mint or stimulating Lemon Verbena Lavender, just $9.99 each.

MOSQUITO SEASON PROTECTION

Bug repellent is a necessity for any Michigander during summer.  Especially when it's applied directly to skin, it's best to avoid all the nasty chemicals found in many standard repellents, and choose a product that is safe for children, pets, and the environment.

Another good reason to eat your vegetables: Health Guru David Wolf suggests protecting yourself from the inside out with Vitamin B1 (Thiamine).  Food sources that are rich in B1 include asparagus, sunflower seeds, green peas, flax seeds, Brussels sprouts, spinach.  With enough of this vitamin in your system, you to become less attractive to mosquitoes by giving off a "yeasty" scent that is undetected by humans, but repulsive to mosquitoes.

Perfect for backyard activity or camping, try new Murphy's Naturals Mosquito Sticks and Candles.  Murphy's Mosquito Sticks are made from 100% natural, plant-based ingredients: Bamboo, Citronella, Lemongrass & Rosemary.  Nothing you don't want, there is NO D.E.E.T., petroleum or any toxins.  Each stick burns for at least 2 hours and comes in a paper tube of 12.  Candles are made with the same oils in a base of RSPO (Certified Responsibly Sourced) Palm Wax and last for about 30 hours. Just $11.99 each!

Buzz Away Extreme by Quantum Health is a clinically studied formula that offers up to 4 hour protection against mosquitoes, and 2.5 hours for ticks, with just one application.  It blends essential oils like geranium, citronella, cedarwood and lemongrass in a base of soybean oil (soybean oil itself has been studied by University of Florida Medical Entymology Lab as an effective base for repellent).

To take more of a DIY approach, make your own bug sprays with these essential oils that are commonly used as repellents:

Mosquitos – citronella, lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus, catnip, basil, clove, thyme, lemongrass, geranium, lavender
Fleas – cedarwood, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lemongrass, lavender, orange, pine,
Ticks – rose geranium, juniper, rosewood, thyme, grapefruit, oregano

BUG BITE RELIEF with Homeopathics!
Even with proper precautions, bug bites can happen.  In the case of a bee or wasp sting, the homeopathic Apis Mellifica is a well known remedy to help ease pain and swelling.  Note that in case of swelling of eyelids, ears, throat, or limbs seek immediate medical attention.  Staphysagria is another homeopathic remedy that helps ease itching and swelling.  Available from Boiron in the blue tubes.  $7.99 each.

We have found that blends of essential oils topically and homeopathics internally work well together.  Combination oils like Nature's Sunshine Tei Fu tend to cool and neutralize the itchy feeling.  Tea Tree is another oil used as an antiseptic in case of too much scratching!

SKIN CARE CENTRAL
Skin is the largest organ in the body, covering an average of 22 square feet.  Although we always want our skin to look it's best, we are especially aware of it during the warm months because more skin is showing!  Creams and topical treatments are important, but since our skin absorbs nutrients from the bloodstream, it is important to note when issues can be tackled from the inside out.  Here are a few key botanicals and nutrients to nourish skin.

ASTAXANTHIN
This potent caretenoid antioxidant is great to have on hand especially during times of increased sun exposure. It is a naturally occurring compound found in microalgae and the creatures that eat the algae, like salmon.  The pinkish-orange colored compound is what actually protects the algae from the sun's rays as it rises to the surface of the ocean.

As one of the most powerful antioxidants known, it has been studied as having potential to benefit nearly all the body systems, from structural to circulatory to immune.  It even has cosmetic appeal, to help men and women maintain more youthful looking skin with documented improvements in wrinkles, age spot reduction, elasticity, skin texture and moisture.  Find Healthy Origins Astaxanthin in 4mg 60 and 150 softgels in our immune system section.

CELLFOOD Oxygen Gel
This gel utilizes the power of oxygen, aloe vera, lavender blossom extract, glycerine to support healthy skin.  CellFood's ability to deliver oxygen to the body at the cellular level— while at the same time scavenging free radicals— is at the heart of its detoxifying properties. And Cellfood’s wide array of plant-sourced trace minerals, enzymes and amino acids provides foundational cellular nutrition, giving the body what it needs to heal itself, as nature intended.
This gel is a great topical way to help decrease the appearance of fine lines, refine oily skin, and renew skin texture.  It is great for sensitive skin with only the highest quality ingredients, no fragrance added, non-oily, and paraben free, no animal testing.  $33.99.

COLLAGEN
Collagen is the most abundant protein in humans, accounting for about 30% of the body's total protein.  There are several types of collagen; most commonly you hear about Type 1 & 3 when talking about skin, and type 2 for joints.

The collagen molecule itself is much too large to be absorbed through the skin, so some beauty treatments actually inject it into the skin.  But there is another way!  Taken internally, it must be "hydrolysed" or broken down to be utilized where repair is needed in the body.

NeoCell Super Collagen™ contains hydrolyzed Type 1 & 3 collagen, providing the amino acids necessary to boost collagen supply to help minimize fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, support bone matrix, repair connective tissue, slow hair loss, thicken fine hair, and strengthen nails.

Available in a 7oz powder that is best taken with orange juice (for Vitamin C), it provides 6600mg of collagen per serving!   You can also find it in 120 tablets providing 6000mg of collagen along with vitamin C.  Each is only $18.99!  Beauty Bursts Soft Chews are a tasty way to get 2000mg of collagen as well as 20mg of Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C in a Fruit Punch flavored treat with just 2g of sugar per chew.  Hyaluronic Acid is an important component to boost skin moisture.  NeoCell Beauty Bursts are $21.99 for 60 chews.
Try making your own treats with collagen powder.  Find a recipe for orange-cranberry collagen gelatin squares right here.

BioCell Collagen
BioCell's collagen is unique in that its patented process creates a collagen that closely mirrors the composition of human joint tissue in a form the body can absorb.  Nicknamed the "Joint Juice," Jusuru is one of our favorite delivery systems for Type 2 collagen.  We first introduced it in a newsletter last September, so you can read more about it here.  But since we are talking about skin, BioCell has created a product that is specifically formulated with bioavailable collagen peptides for skin (BioCell collagen CG) called Stromaderm.

In addition to Jusuru, get synergistic support from Stromaderm Body Serum Spray!  A topical formula with BioCell Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, Omega 3 & 6 Essential Fatty Acids from Meadowfoam oil, and glycolic acid.  Clinical studies on humans showed a nearly 50% decrease in the appearance of deep lines, with improved skin hydration, tone, texture, and smoothness.  For best results, use twice daily, morning and night.  Spray Stromaderm on face, arms, legs, hands, wherever you want to see more youthful looking skin!

HERB OF THE MONTH:  CHAMOMILE

Chamomile has a long history of medicinal use.  Only now are we beginning to understand why it works so well for skin issues.  A study in human volunteers demonstrated that chamomile flavonoids and essential oils penetrate below the skin surface into the deeper skin layers. This is important for their use as topical anti-inflammatory agents.
Infuse chamomile in a lotion, or put in a cool bath to soothe skin rashes, eczema and psoriasis, minor burns and sunburn.  It may also speed healing and prevent bacterial infection.
In addition to topical use, Chamomile's reported anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic actions relax the smooth muscles of the uterus, stomach and intestine. The herb may therefore help relieve menstrual cramps, nausea, heartburn, and stress-related flatulence, irritable bowel problems and various gastrointestinal complaints.

Find German Chamomile in our bulk section just just $2.03 per ounce. Organic Chamomile in tea bags is available from Celebration Herbs for just $6.09 per box of 24 tea bags.
