 McClary Bros. Drinking Vinegars
IN STORE DEMO:  Tues. August 9
11am-?
Taste a sample of Detroit's finest old-timey mixer during the in-store demo Tuesday, August 9 (also 20% Off Tuesday).
Traditionally known as "shrubs", the vinegars are handcrafted in small- and micro-batches to showcase the fresh flavors of the season. With organic apples and an old fashioned cold-steep preservation technique, they bring out the richest, most complex flavor profile possible.
Apple Pie, Pineapple & Fennel, Beet & Carrot, and Cranberry are some of their flavors, along with seasonal varieties that rotate in and out for a truly Michigan Made experience.

Try the new, seasonal "Forgotten Flavor" Michigan Saskatoon!  Saskatoons look similar to blueberries, but are more closely related to the apple family, with a sweet, nutty almond flavor.  Saskatoons boast many health benefits: rich in anthocyanin antioxidants (giving it a rich blue color), Vitamin C, and three times the iron and copper compared to raisins!

Come in as early as 11am for a taste and a few recipe ideas!

Back To School BRAIN BOOSTERS
Pay Attention!  This is not just for students, but anyone who may have trouble with memory and concentration should take note of these herbs and homeopathics.  As usual, talk to your health practitioner before adding these to your health regimen.*

Periwinkle
This pretty flower (Vinca minor aka lesser periwinkle) contains an alkaloid compound, vincamine, which has been used therapeutically as a vasodilator, blood thinner, and memory-enhancer.  It has been shown in double-blind studies to help those with Alzheimers disease, and alleviate a type of dementia caused by plaque formation in arteries to the brain.  It may also be useful for a type of tinnitus caused by reduced blood flow to the inner ear.  Taken therapeutically as a tea, it should be infused in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes and consumed three times daily, with meals for better absorption of the active compounds.
We have periwinkle in bulk for just $1.14 per ounce!

Rosemary
You may want to go for Rosemary essential oil for best results.  A study done in the UK found that cognitive performance (speed and accuracy) improved after smelling rosemary aroma, specifically the active compound in rosemary essential oil 1,8-cineole.  In another instance, rosemary was used to relieve stress. Combined with other pleasant-smelling oils, it may lower cortisol levels and help reduce anxiety. Another study found using lavender and rosemary essential oil sachets helped reduce test-taking anxiety  among graduate nursing school students.
Find rosemary essential oil for $16.49 from Mountain Rose for a 15ml bottle.  Rosemary is also found in an essential oil blend for Focus by NectarEssences for $18.99.  Organic rosemary is available in the bulk herbs section for $1.20 per ounce.

VÄXA's Attend & Attend Minis
This doctor-formulated homeopathic and herbal supplement has been specifically engineered to help support the function of the Central Nervous System (CNS).  It is especially useful in individuals who are inclined to be inattentive, under or overactive, and/or learning impaired.  It was designed to address a broad number of common issues that relate to attention and coordination of multiple tasks, for children, adults, and athletes.

VÄXA's Attend has no known side-effects, and is non-drowsy and contains no stimulants.  It has been featured in the book Prescription for Nutritional Healing for behavioral and learning issues.  Attend starts working from the moment you take it, although outward results may take as little as two weeks or as long as several months to be noticeable.

Attend Minis offer the same formulation, but in a smaller package for those who have trouble swallowing.  Both types of Attend can be find in the Children's Supplement section currently.  Reg. Retail is around $43, but they are ON SALE in August for just $35.99!

A SWEET EXCURSION

As part of ongoing staff education, we were lucky enough to visit one of our local vendors, beekeepers T.M. Klein & Sons.  We were able to visit their "Environmentally Verified" farm in the woods to learn about the process of tending hives and extracting honey.  Although the general process has remained largely unchanged for the last century, we got a sneak peek into room with modern, efficient equipment, where the frames containing beeswax and honey are separated.

Of course, we had an opportunity to taste the variety of honeys made there, and honey direct from the comb!  While most commercial honeys are heated and filtered to the point of eliminating all traces of beneficial bee by-products (like pollen, propolis, royal jelly), it is good to know that T.M. Klein's honey is never micron filtered nor excessively heated.

With just a handful of employees at T.M Klein & Sons, it was incredible to see the amount of honey that is produced.  Their bees are hardworking as well.  There is a good chance the almonds you eat are thanks to these Michigan bees!  Seasonally, their hives make a trip to pollinate almond trees in California.  In order to produce 1 pound of honey, a hive of bees must fly 55,000 miles, visiting 2 million flowers.  One bee colony can produce 60 to 100 pounds of honey per year, and a single average worker bee makes only about 1/12 teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.  You can read more bee facts here.

Taste their honey for yourself!  We offer their raw, creamed and regular honey as well as naturally flavored cherry and cinnamon honeys at the store.  Coming soon, you can talk to the T.M. Klein crew and others about honey, bees, and beekeeping at the Michigan Honey Festival Sat. August 6th, 9am-5pm at the Harvey Kern Pavilion.
