We are nutty about shopping local.  Every March, we celebrate by offering 10% discount on all of our MI-made products from local vendors.  While you can find the complete updated list of Michigan Vendors on our website, you can also browse around the store for the "Support Michigan" tags, grab the corresponding coupon and take it to checkout to save!
New Michigan vendors we have brought in this past year include Integrity Pure & Natural and Small House Farm.

Integrity Pure & Natural is based in SE Michigan and was founded by a licensed cosmetologist, DeAnna, who was looking for good, clean body products for herself and her sensitive-skinned family.  The entire line she formulated is Gluten-free, Dye-free, Paraben-free, and uses No Animal Testing.

Small House is a Mid-Michigan sustainable farm on the edge of Huron Forest, founders Ben and Heather are all about simplicity.  They produce nuts and seeds, flours, fresh-pressed oils, home and body care products.  Recently, their Hemp Seed oil was chosen winner of 2017 Good Food Award in the oils category.   All of SHF's products are made in small batches and with simple, organic and wildcrafted products. They never use artificial dyes or ingredients and strive to use local or organic alternatives whenever possible.

HERB OF THE MONTH - Red Clover

I'm looking over these facts on Red Clover, that you might have overlooked before..

History and Botany

The unofficial symbol for March, clover is Native to Europe, Central Asia, and North Africa, and have been naturalized in North and South America.  Clover is a favorite of bees and butterflies, cattle and other grazing animals.  Trifolium pratense is the Red variety; this purplish-topped flower grows wild in yards or alongside fields and roadsides.  White clover, Trifolium repens, is equally as common in our area, but grows closer to the ground and has smaller flowers, with the classic clover leaf shape we associate with St. Patrick's Day.

From the Latin Trifolium literally translates to "three-leaved", and was used to illustrate the Holy Trinity in Irish iconography.  For today, we will focus on the medicinal properties of the red variety.

Uses
Very restorative, red clover is a source of many nutrients including calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine, and vitamin C.   Traditionally used as a diuretic for gout and an expectorant for coughs, red clover helps stimulate urine flow and soothe inflamed lungs.  It has also been used by American herbalists as a "blood purifier" for skin inflammations.  Because it helps relax smooth muscle, it has been used for abdominal cramping associated with dysmenorrhea or constipation.  As part of the legume family Fabaceae, it is rich in isoflavones, which have estrogen-like activity, and has made red clover  a topic of research on potential cardiovascular, structural, and anti-cancer benefits, for women in particular.

Studies have found red clover to have blood-thinning properties, which helps reduce blood clots and improve blood flow.  This study on menopausal women found that the isoflavones from red clover improved blood vessel strength and flexibility (arterial compliance).

As estrogen levels drop in women, osteoporosis risk increases.  Preliminary research on an extract of red clover suggested slower bone loss and increased bone mineral density in pre- and peri-menopausal women.

Researches hypothesize that isoflavones may help prevent certain types of cancers like prostate and endometrial cancers, based on some promising activity in test tubes, but more research is needed.  While there has been some evidence that isoflavones from red clover can help decrease breast density, (compared to conventional hormone replacement therapies which can increase mammographic breast density), red clover cannot yet be considered a cancer preventative.

Safety & Side Effects:

Though generally safe, always talk to your health care professional before beginning any new regimen.  Red clover may increase risk of bleeding for those on blood thinners, and may interfere with the body's ability to process some drugs that are broken down by liver enzymes. People with a history of breast cancer, or taking any estrogens, hormone replacements, or birth control pills should not use red clover without doctor approval.  Pregnant and nursing women should avoid it.*
