Brewer's Yeast & Bugs
Though it may sound far-fetched, there has been plenty of anecdotal evidence suggesting that eating Brewer's Yeast may help repel mosquitoes. It is high in vitamin B1 (thiamine), which is apparently offensive to mosquitos, but not detectable by humans. So, after we consume brewer's yeast, the odor is excreted through our skin to provide a bit of extra protection. Brewer's yeast is often recommended for dogs too to repel fleas and ticks! It is probably best to plan ahead and start taking it a day or two ahead of time as well as the day of mosquito exposure. Any edge we can give ourselves to keep mosquitos, ticks, and other pests away naturally is worth a try, right? Especially when there are so many other benefits.

HOW IT'S MADE
Brewer's yeast is obviously used in brewing beer, but can also be grown on sugar beets or any glucose-rich medium. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast is cultivated on malted barley or some other grain used in the beer-making process and after fermentation, the yeast is separated from the beer, dried and debittered. While it is being cultivated, the S. cerevisiae divides about 20 times and manufacture amino acids and vitamins in the process. When cultivated for a food supplement, it is dried at to ensure that it is non-active and will not continue to ferment.

HOW to USE
Available as a powder or flakes, its cheese-like flavor is a favorite on popcorn, pasta, in salad dressings or soup. Typically, it is advised to add a teaspoon or two at the end of the cooking process so the high heat doesn't destroy some of the B vitamins. It can also be used as a B-boost in a smoothie.
PRECAUTIONS:
There is no official recommended dose, so most experts say to start small to check for potential side effects. Some people do not tolerate yeasts or are sensitive to glutamates (brewer's yeast contains glutamic acid as part of it's amino acid profile.)
There are some potential interactions with drugs, so always consult your health care provider first, especially if you are on MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) used for treating depression or meperidine, a narcotic pain medication. Interactions with these can cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure, or hypertensive crisis. Brewer's yeast may also enhance the effect of diabetes medications, and should be monitored closely to avoid hypoglycemia.
Consult your healthcare provider before taking brewer’s yeast if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use caution if you have a central venous catheter, Crohn’s disease, frequent yeast infections or yeast allergies or weakened immune system.*
