April Fresh News

ALL NEW IN APRIL: EXPO WEST FINDS

Earlier in March, Healthy Habitz 4 Life buyers and owners made the trip to the West Coast to find the latest and greatest in the natural products industry.  With the goal of finding the products our customer have been asking for, and finding them at reasonable prices, the HH4L crew returned full of ideas for the year ahead.  Here is just a sampling of some of the unique products found at Expo that have hit our shelves.  More new items will be coming later in the month and into the summer, so we'll keep you posted!

DIFFUSING WAS NEVER EASIER

Make every room (and even your car) feel more like the spa with SPA ROOM Diffusers. Affordably priced and compact, we are happy to have a wider selection of essential oil diffusers to fit every budget.

Choose the right type for your space.  Travel size fan diffusers come in rainbow (white with color changing light) or a silvery gray color, each comes with a USB plug and reusable/replaceable microfiber absorbing pads.  Replacement 6pk of pads is only $2.99.  They also may be powered by battery or AC adaptor (not included).

These travel sizes do not rely on heat, but on a fan to disperse scent to a roughly 50 square foot area, only $14.99.  The standard Ultrasonic Misting Diffuser runs for 4 hours, or whenever the water runs out, and is only $19.99.  The deluxe version comes with a remote control for only $39.99!

THE BUZZ in LIP CARE

Portland Bee Balm Lip Balms - Give Bees A Chance!  Since we are all about supporting bees and their keepers, we love this mom & pop company!  Simple, straightforward, quality ingredients make up their lip balms: Pacific NW beeswax, organic cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil, organic California extra virgin olive oil, available with or without Oregon peppermint essential oil too.

Sustainably packaged with birchwood label and soy based ink, their labels reduce the use of fossil fuels.  Since paper production uses a lot of energy, with harsh chemical discharge, they chose labels made of non-pulped wood, which uses fewer chemicals and less energy in their manufacturing.  The label was designed by Portland artists, printed and cut by a Portland company in a continuous effort to support other small and local business.  Only $2.99 each.

Dr. Lip Bang's Lip Freak "Buzzing" Balm - Having discovered this company last year, we have had time to let the idea of this novel lip balm buzz around in our brains, and decided YES, now is the time.  Not for the faint of lips, this natural balm uses essential oil blends to create an electrifying, buzzing sensation on your lips that may or may not freak you out.  If you want to show some love (or take revenge?) on your sweetheart, plant a smooch firmly on his or her lips and watch what happens.  For a most unique sensation, give Lip Freak a try for only $5.99 - we will have some to sample with a swab.  You have been warned.

OHANA ORGANICS Shea Butter Creams

Shea nut butter comes from the stone of a fruit that grows wild throughout the shea belt of Africa. The stones are boiled to extract their soft butter. Africans have used this healing butter for thousands of years.  It's not just shea butter that makes Ohana special, it is the blend of organic olive oil, infused with organic lavender and roses and lavender, vitamin E and essential oils that make this cream useful for:

Sunscreen (SPF 6) Rich in Vitamin F
Soothes after shaving
Dry skin (face, body, hands, feet and hair)
Muscle relaxation and stiffness due to stress
Dark spots, blemishes and skin discoloration
Scars and wrinkles
Burns from sun, wind, sand and heat
Bath addition
Diaper rash..and more!

This blend has been tried and true for even the most sensitive skin, especially babies!  Choose from 4 scents for $4.99 each.

MORE WATER MADE EASIER

Of course we advocate using glass bottles whenever possible, but it is not always the most convenient way to carry gallons of water.  As a second-best option, we now offer BPA-free plastic jugs by New Wave Enviro in a 3 gallon ($15.99) and 5 gallon size ($18.99).  Now you can make fewer trips back and forth to the car when filling your alkaline water, and have much better luck if a the jug happens to fall to the ground.  Conveniently located next to our Ultra-Purified Alkaline Water station.  Proudly made in the USA.

April is IBS Awareness Month

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a "functional" disease that has no clear cause, but one that affects over 30 million people in the US alone, and 9-23% of people worldwide.
Chronic, recurrent abdominal pain and problems with constipation and/or diarrhea are the common symptoms.  It is similar to IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) which is sort of an umbrella term for inflammatory diseases like Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, and Celiac.  The difference being these IBDs have auto-immune factors that cause the inflammation.  Regardless, many people who have experienced these painful abdominal symptoms have switched to a Gluten Free diet or a low FODMAP diet to find relief.

These two diets are related, but distinct.  FODMAP (stands for fermentable oligo-di-monosaccharides and polyols) is an elimination diet based on the idea that fermentable carbohydrates aggravate the symptoms of IBS.  Some examples of FODMAPs include:
  • Fructose (honey, fruit, high fructose corn syrup)
  • Lactose (dairy products)
  • Frutcans (wheat, onion and garlic)
  • Galactans (beans, lentils, legumes, soy)
  • Polyols (sweeteners containing sorbitol, mannitol, xylitols, maltitol and stone fruits like avocado, apricots, cherries, peaches, plums, etc.)
For a more complete list, find high FODMAP and low FODMAP food lists here.  Note that although a food item may be low FODMAP doesn't mean we recommend it for a healthy diet (i.e. artificial sweetener aspartame, etc.)  Equally, many high FODMAP foods are still nutritious and healthful to those who do not have GI (gastro-intestinal) problems.

Gluten is a protein that gives bread its elasticity, and is found in wheat, rye, spelt, triticale, barley, triticale and wheat derivatives.  A complete list of gluten-containing foods can be found here.  According to the FDA, something may contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten and still be labeled "gluten free".

For those who are shopping for Gluten Free, look down aisle 4 for the majority of the products.  We also have chips and chocolate which are nearly all made without gluten ingredients.  For your convenience, look for this symbol on the shelftag to denote Gluten Free.

Look for FODMAP food guides available for the month of April to help clarify which foods are high and low on the spectrum.  Usually, gluten free is low FODMAP, but sometimes low FODMAP is not gluten free. For example, sourdough spelt bread and sprouted Ezekiel breads are low FODMAP choices that are NOT gluten free.

ALL ABOUT pH
Rona Alexander
Thurs. April 21
6:00 - 7:00pm
FREE EVENT

When talking about pH in the body, what does that mean?  Our blood pH has to stay in a specific range for us to live.  Our stomach has to be highly acidic in order to properly digest our food.  Why is it certain foods which themselves are acidic - like apple cider vinegar and lemon juice - are known as "alkaline-forming"?  What can be done to achieve an acid-base balance in our bodies, and why is it important?

Join Rona Alexander as she talks about the benefits of alkaline water, foods that are alkalizing, foods to avoid to maintain balance, and recipes to make at home.
